The Middle East has been a hotbed of ethnic conflict since modern man began to record history. During the 1980's the power-hungry were hard at work. This work would have impact on the world, and the Canadian firefighting community. Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait and brought the world to the brink of a world war. A united force of military power crushed the aggressor and pushed his armies in defeat back into Iraq. During their retreat, the Iraqis severely damaged or set KUWAIT ABLAZE with 232 oil wells, creating the largest oil field emergency in history. Ten different countries fought these fires and controlled the spread of impending ecological disaster.
In eight months, Canadian firefighters tamed more blazing oil wells than any other country. Some of the largest and most challenging wells were tacked by the small Canadian crew, which brought respect from the established oil field emergency crews.
